Desktop Sundials, 2013, installation view, Peninsula Art Space
The sundial is a fantastic pedagogical tool: It serves as a demonstrative device that lets the viewer learn on an experiential level through the physicality of the object. As the viewer locates the shadow in relation to the dial, they must also consider their relation to the sun, and to the earth's daily cycle. Learning tools interest me, because they convert abstract concepts into concrete ideas. I believe that art can function in this way as well; as a bridge between ourselves and the natural world.
